Occasionally, when I am a little bored with my food, I take a trip out of the country via the kitchen! _Linda Weiss, cooking editor.
Here’s the scenario: you want to build a house. You know what kind of house you want. You know how much money you have to spend. Here’s the catch: the two don’t match. You want a roomy, luxurious house with every conceivable feature you’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, your budget dictates that you can afford a two-room bungalow in the edge of a cotton field. What do you do? Text: Marsha M. Hewitt.
Working with clients for the past ten years has made me understand that most people desire to create their own definition of their home, their taste, style, and personality.

When you find a not-so-great house in a terrific location, the sensible thing to do is remodel it. Jim and Elizabeth Tharp found a house sorely in need of a facelift, so they enlisted some help from the architecture firm Architrave to revamp it. They reconfigured the entry from one street to another and doubled the square footage, which dramatically improved the interior space. The result is a showplace, filled with items lovingly chosen. Many Northerners choose South Carolina beaches for the climate. The Phinneys of Vermont were already familiar with the Palmetto State, since Jane London Phinney used to visit her grandparents at Horsebranch Hall in Camden when her parents came down to ride. She and her husband, George, wanted a low-key beach where they could vacation. A recommendation took them to Edisto about 24 years ago, and they decided to build their second home there. They couldn’t be more pleased with their choice. Text: Margaret Foster. Photography: Rich Frutchey. Architect: Tim Hilkhuijsen, AIA. Builder: Walter Construction Co. Landscaper: Landplan Associates.
